PERSONALITY:

• Leon begins his illustrious career fighting zombies in Resident Evil 2 as a naive rookie cop, fresh out of the police academy. He chooses Raccoon City as his first post because he believes its where he'll be most needed - hearing about all the strange grizzly murders and occurrences there, he decides that's where he wants to go. The danger doesn't worry him - in fact, when he receives a phone call warning him to stay away from Raccoon City because of the zombie outbreak, that just seems to convince him that he's needed even more.


• Leon has an almost pathological need to help people. That is, after all, why he decided to become a cop in the first place. Though throughout the series this gets tempered somewhat (though never really snuffed out entirely), during the events of Resident Evil 2 it's perhaps most on display. He tries to help almost everyone he meets, despite being in an absurdly dangerous situation where most sane people would only be worried about self preservation. He willingly puts himself in increasing amounts of danger in hopes of making a positive contribution - instead of just prioritizing escaping Raccoon City, he finds himself descending into the sewers, and then a dangerous bio lab, trying to assist a woman he's just met, and who is pretty obviously manipulating him.


• Despite his self-sacrificing nature and his extreme weakness to deception (or a pretty girl), Leon isn't completely a moron. Just mostly. He is able to deduce a great deal of what happened in the Raccoon City Police Department on his own, braving its bizarre traps and puzzles in order to find his way out. He's also eventually able to figure out he's being tricked, even if he picks extremely awkward and dramatically inconvenient times to confront his deceiver. Okay, actually maybe he is completely a moron. Never mind, forget this bullet point.


• Though the point only becomes magnified as the series goes on, Leon is described at times as a "genius of survival"... he's able to somehow get through any situation with minimal resources. Though later on in the series he actually gets proper training and experience, at the time of Resident Evil 2 all he has is basic police training... which he somehow manages to utilize to fight off hordes of zombies and gigantic monstrosities, all with fairly basic weaponry. Its these skills that eventually make him such an asset to the government, though realistically it's never explained in any meaningful way why he's so good at this stuff...
